Episode 23 – Sissi – The Young Empress – 1956

For the second part of the Sissi-trilogy we got a great co-host: Adam Scott is joining us today to talk about parenting, ruling a country and fancy dresses! We also discover ruses, drinking habits and the easiness of (re-)falling in love if you are in the mountains.

Episode 22 – Schoolgirl Report Part 2: What Keeps Parents Awake at Night – 1971

FFPÖ follows through on a request that wasn’t taken lightly and we got the perfect co-host to make it so: Jack Holmes joins me this time to discuss female empowerment, weird acting, 10 plots, surprise twists, German/Austrian attempts at humor and one of the greatest intro songs of all time.

Episode 21 – Der Knochenmann – The Bone Man – 2009

Luke Hacker is my gracious co-host this time and we try to be as fun as we can, while talking about eating people in this here proto-Hannibal film. And the movie shows that preparing humans is as disgusting or as delicious as you want it to be. A movie so Austrian in its core, that you will find it hard to not party afterwards with a Schnitzel in your mouth and Mozart in your ears. Now listen to us ramble on about it for more than an hour!

Episode 20 – Die Piefke Saga – Der Skandal – 1990

A real Austrian classic, is the target of the 20th episode of FFPÖ and I pulled out a good amount of stops for you guys: we have our first “professional” co-host with us this time in the great Tommy Meyer-Ortiz. He and I wax poetically about the Austrian landscape, the rift between Austrians and Germans, stereotypes and the crushing realism, that this movie portraits, without being to cynical or evil. But as always, tangents are ahead and we get lost a few times in the woods mad out of our own words.

Also, I lie about it being a two-parter at the end of the episode, disregard that.

Episode 19 – Sissi – 1955

My guest-host this time is the very amusing and charming Christoph Fritz and we go for a very Austrian classic, the 1955 movie Sissi! A story about “hook”ing up, animal cruelty and no stakes. We marvel in the use of the Austrian landscape, the dressmaking and the mad raves thrown by the royalty!

Episode 18 – Import/Export – 2007

Nelly and I sit down to import and export our thoughts about this brilliant piece of Austrian film-making. A wonderful road-trip interweaves with the struggles of making in a new country and seeking empowerment from their respective oppressing forces, be they economic or personal or both. Now listen to us try to derive humor from it and having our own struggle.

Episode 16 – Kommissar Rex – Der Puppenmörder – 1996

My dear friend Alex returns (last seen on The Rekottaning) to discuss this gem of Austrian tv. A head-to-head between a menacing mass-murdering puppet repairman (played by Christoph Waltz) and the good inspector with his always entertaining side-kick Rex, who always steals the show. This is one for the ages and FFPÖ wants to thank you all for a great year and an even better 2017!

Episode 15 – Aufschneider (Sang chaud et chambre froide) – Teil 1 – 2010

Merry Christmas everyone, what better way to celebrate this wonderful season than to listen to a new episode of FFPÖ? Because nothing says Happy Holidays more than a super, super dark comedy made by the Austrian master himself, Josef Hader, in a co-production with ARTE. Organs get stolen, people get harassed, cars get smashed, alcohol is consumed and dialogue so cringy that your toenails will bend up, all in all the perfect complement for the season and Nelly and I are trying to give it appropriate frame.

Episode 13 – Kommissar Rex – Ein perfekter Mord – 1994

Probably the most famous Austrian TV-Show of all time gets the FFPÖ treatment. That includes quips about dog obedience, 90s aesthetics, modern household appliances and good ol’fashioned sexism. My guest co-host is the great Andrea Hogan as my final US-based comedian and we go out in a bang!

Episode 11 – Im Keller (In the Basement) – 2014

The terrific Lex Morales joins me in this episode of FFPÖ to talk about the literally buried world of the Austrian soul. We explore the entertaining, thought-provoking and downright disturbing basements of Normal Joe and Jane and many, many questions pile up in this here episode.
